A magazine's cover page plays a very pivotal role in the mood and feeling of the rest of the magazine. In preparation for creating my own, I researched three different programs that each provide food magazine cover page templates and I took into account the positives and negatives in order to settle on a final program to use.
Program 1: Canva
Canva is an online graphic design program that I use all the time for my schoolwork. A benefit of using this program is that it caters to a wide range of aesthetics and layouts. The editing process is also straightforward. On the contrary, Canva is not entirely free and I won't be challenging myself.
This is an example of a template created by Canva that I found here. I like this cover because it's cute and pleasant. This is due to the pastel cupcakes in the image and the use of the color pink. I also like how there is only one cover line because that way the cupcakes are the main focus.
This second template is very different from the first since the color palette is a lot moodier. I like how the use of serif fonts since it makes the cover page seem more sophisticated. I also like how there are two extra images added in the bottom right corner that provide information without having to use more text.
Program 2: Photoshop
My second option was Photoshop. I'm already familiar with the program since it was part of my class's curriculum. In fact, I've created my own composite image. This program is a lot more time-consuming than others. Using this program would mean having to search up my questions since the editing process is a lot more complicated. Luckily, there are many videos and articles readily available on the internet to answer my questions which is a major benefit of using a popular program. The reason why it's more complicated is that it has a lot more options and tools I can use that other programs don't offer.
This is one of the templates that Photoshop lists here. I like how there is only one image because it makes the page not look overcrowded. I also like how the title, "fresh." matches the oranges in the picture and also pops up in the main cover line.
The second magazine cover is very fun and creative. I really love how the main image looks. It looks choppy and unrealistic yet it manages to remain artistic and will no doubt draw in readers. Another aspect of this cover page that intrigues me is the dark green border that surrounds the light green background. The two-toned design looks very similar to the avocado depicted in the image. This helps with the flow of the page.
Program 3: Marq
I came across Marq when I was searching for different programs to use and it was the first time I had heard of it. The templates provided are free and look very professional. However, some negatives come with this program. For one, I would have to learn how to use it from scratch which isn't ideal. Plus, the selection of cover page templates is severely limited since only six are provided.
These templates where found here. I love how the first cover looks like a real magazine that I would find in a store. The image and cover lines all look very professional and the subtle shadow below the cover line description adds some depth to the cover.
This cover is the most minimalistic out of all the templates I looked at since there are no cover lines or added text. I love how the full image of the pasta dish isn't shown. I don't often see this on magazine covers so it attracts my attention. I also like how "Chef's" in "The Chef's Table" is in a different font because it helps to distinguish the word.
Final Decision:
After a thorough analysis, I've decided to use Canva when editing my cover page. I chose Canva because I have experience in using this program and feel confident in my abilities to utilize the many tools that are offered. It was difficult choosing between Canva and Photoshop, but ultimately my lack of experience in Photoshop is what turned me away from it. I'm very glad I researched different programs that can create a cover page because I now feel a lot more informed about how they vary.
